Why do we call ourselves “The Well”? As far back as the ancient world, wells have been known as a source of community, legacy, and life. Because where there is water, life happens…and where life happens, things can get pretty interesting (and messy), to say the least. But we don’t get our name from just any old well; we get our name from a very particular well. In the Gospel of John (that’s a book in the Bible, in case you were wondering), there’s a pretty amazing story that’s known as “The Woman at the Well”. This woman lived a pretty rough life, she had been rejected many times over (5 husbands divorced her and her new man was just using her!), and she was ridiculed by society so much she had to sneak out just to get a drink of water. Needless to say she was thirsty physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. But one day, as she was getting herself a drink at the well she encountered Jesus, and he asked her to share her story with him. Initially, she was reluctant (she probably had some trust issues) but after a very transparent conversation, he promised her that she would never thirst again if she trusted and obeyed him. This encounter literally changed her life to the point that she left her water pots at the well and ran to tell people about Jesus and her conversation with him. She was no longer thirsty. She was revitalized by “living water” and wanted others (even the people who ridiculed her) to have the same experience.
That “living water” is not some mysterious or mystical beverage; it’s simply a relationship of trust between people, Jesus, and his church. That’s what you’ll find at The Well. Here, life happens, hard lives and broken people are restored, and new relationships begin. People and their stories matter. It’s a place where anybody from any walk of life can encounter Jesus, much like the woman in the story. That’s what we’re about here at The Well. We are all thirsty in some way, and need to be refreshed. We believe the living water that revitalized her can, and does, refresh people today. Our dream is to see people revitalized to the point where they want others to have the same experience.
